In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
